Things to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenia was just a blurb on our trip around the world but the city of Ljubljana left quite the impression. We’ve always said that we could live in Croatia but now we think that we can add Slovenia (or at least Ljubljana) to the list. While we only had 48 hours in the country, we made sure to explore as much as possible.
A few things to know about Ljubljana. First, it’s a wonderful place to people watch. We halfhazardly stumbled upon the weekend flea market and were in heaven. Not only did we find numerous coffee shops with an abundance of heated outdoor seating, but it made for the ideal spot to sip our coffees and watch the locals haggle over Turkish rugs and antiques. I wanted to buy everything.
Ljubljana is just straight picturesque. One of our favorite ways to pass the time was to wander the streets around the river and look for local art. This art came in many different forms. We enjoyed the street art but also gravitated towards the many street performances. From ballet to Spanish guitar, Ljubljana offered a little something for everyone.
One of our favorite stops in Ljubljana was at the newly opened Ziferblat. Part coffee shop, part local hangout, this is the place to bring your friends and spend the afternoon playing games and filling up on delicious drinks. You immediately feel at home as you walk in. Grab a clock of your choice (this will decipher how much you pay when you leave) and find a spot to hunker down. The kitchen is open and guests can prepare whatever drinks their hearts desire.
You can have as much coffee and tea as you want. You’re simply charged by the amount of time you spend. Did we mention that there were also cookies? Because there were. So many cookies that were just there for the taking. We found this unique and quirky place with help from our Flytographer photographer, Mankica. After our photoshoot, we grabbed a drink (or two), enjoyed one too many cookies, and asked Mankica all about her hometown of Ljubljana. She is so knowledgeable and pointed us in the right direction for a delicious pizza dinner.
Speaking of our Flytographer photoshoot, look at some of the incredible shots that Mankica took! Our shoot was at the Ljubljana Castle and we couldn’t have chosen a better spot.
All in all, we adored our time in Ljubljana. We ended up staying at Allegro Hotel and loved its location (walking distance to everything!), its welcome drinks (cherry brandy, anyone?), and the overall cozy feel of the place. We highly recommend it should you ever find yourself in the city.
Ljubljana left quite the impression on us and we sincerely hope that we make it back soon. We might even have to fit a trip to Slovenia into our annual Croatia adventures.
An amazing place with such natural delights. I will surely plan my upcoming vacation to this place. thanks for posting nice views.
I love when a place hits you and you just know you love it, even if you weren’t there for a prolonged time. I’ve only heard amazing things about Slovenia *sigh*
Great article and amazing pics. Loved it.
Also loved your writing skills.
Thanx for sharing and Happy New Year.
It looks lovely! I really want to take an Eastern European trip sometime!
What a lovely town. Coming from Sri Lanka I always appreciated the less crowded and charming small towns like this found mostly in European countries.
Your pictures are amazing! I’ve been to Ljubljana for a couple days a few years ago, thought it was a Sunday and everything was closed.
I did have amazing deer steak wrapped in bacon, though 🙂
Keep up the great work on your blog. If you’ve got a few minutes, drop my blog @ http://protravelblog.com and say hello 🙂
